I think you can take the kid to Chimelong Resort and Guangzhou Zoo when traveling to Guanngzhou and the Window of the World and Happy Valley in Shenzhen. FYI: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/guangdong/guangzhou/

There are two kinds of fast trains: G trains and D trains. It takes much longer time by D trains.

D trains: around 5.5 hours. G trains: around 4.5 hours.

There are four trains from Guangzhou to Shanghai. The tickets of the three trains are the same: K528, K512, T170.

Hard seat: 203 rmb
Hard berth (upper):345 rmb
Hard berth (middle): 357 rmb
Hard berth (lower): 369 rmb
Soft berth (upper): 630 rmb
Soft berth (lower): 658 rmb

Time: 19 hours and 21 minutes (T170), 20 hours and 45 minutes(K512) and 20 hours and 8 minutes (K528).
