I wanted to do HKG-Kunming-Dali but the connections do not work. I do not want to wait overnight as not much time and have seen Kunming.

No, flights still need to go via Kunming. Try flying Shenzhen -- Kunming, will the connections be better? Or else, take a bus or the overnight train to Dali, from Kunming.

24-26.5 hours depending on which train you take.
