GUEST72187 This thread seems to be the most logical of all on the web.
I specifically need to know if misdemeanors (e.g., lewd conduct) more than 15 years ago are checked by the embassy for a tourist (L) visa. I am more than inclined to check "no" at this point, but sure could use some solid assurance. Thanks.

GUEST43144 Either way you are probably fine. Read some of the previous posters with worse records than you. If you plan to return several times I would definately consider saying no.

GUEST72187 Does anyone know if they actually run a background check - or just the "no fly" lists and FBI lists?

No one knows but I guess YES. The embassy won't tell you the truth even you ask.

GUEST66482 Just so everyone knows...

I had a misdemeanor DUI one year ago and applied for a work visa (z visa). I checked "no" and applied through the San Francisco embassy. I received my the visa with no problem. I departed San Fran August 24, 2011 with zero hassle. I was told by a visa service that the Chinese embassy does not do a criminal background check on applicants applying for a visa. Only a few countries actually do. Only if you admit it will you have to send all the documents pertaining to the crime, and then its up to them. So, checking "no" is the best way to go! Hopefully this will help a lot of people who are panicking like I was about having a "criminal" background. CHECK NO! :)

GUEST66482 I got my work visa to come to china with no problem while having a criminal background (misdemeanor DUI) and I also received my resident permit with no problems. I teach and live in Shanghai, have been here about one month. All is well.
