Recently, Russia has passed a bill on countering corruption, which aims at increasing governmental officials' salary to combat corruption. Likely, this topic has been discussed heatedly in China. In the past, some experts suggested that China should adopt this method to counter corruption. However, this measure was abandoned finally. In recent years, those governmental officials' salaries have been raised sharply. What's more, they have their houses, cars and other subsidies. But corruption cases have emerged again and again. It is estimated that about 16 important officials have been investigated and sentenced. Almost all of them once raised their mistresses. Some of them even had several mistresses. The data suggests that high salary and subsidies are useless to counter corruption. Originally, Singapore adopted this measure and has made great achievements. That is why some people suggest China take this measure to combat corruption. Personally, I do not think it will take effect. What do you think? High salary can combat and stop corruption?

Yes, Alan. High salary only can make their appetite bigger and bigger. They never mind of getting more and more. The important thing is to strengthen and improve the supervision system. The government should punish these corrupted officials severely.

China should find its own ways to combat corruption instead of copying other nations' patterns. Singapore has made great achievements by adopting this measure. However, no one can make sure it also take effect in China. I just wonder how other countries combat corruption. Anyone here can share some information on this issue?

The news said that China has set up an anti-corruption bureau to deal with corruption problems. This bureau is directly led by the State Council. One official said that servere punishments are not the effective way to combat corrupition. To combat corruption, prevention is also very important. But how to prevent corruption? Peronally, I think that severe punishments are very necessary. Have you heard a Chinese idom--杀鸡儆猴? In English, it means killing the chicken to frighten the monkey. The government should punish some corrupted officials severely to warn others: if you take bribes, you will be punished as them.

If people are badly paid there is an added incentive to be involved in corruption. people wh\o would not normally choose that patha re tempted. So pay suitable wages and we remove one part ofthe problem, but as others have said, it won't overcome real greed. Kevin: I agree with killing a few chickens, but there are so many monkeys.

The amount of salary - no matter how big it is - people who get it may think that's the number they should actually get, not to say some people always feel they are forever underpaid... The opportunity to get some extra is always tempting, and this seems to have nothing to do with how much they get legally. If you do not believe, just read the news papers, see who are those that are corrupted?? Right! Usually those who are not short of money(in common sense).

Why not start at the top? Kill the monkeys to scare the chickens!
