If by 'work visa' you mean a Z visa, it takes exactly the same amount of time as a tourist visa. ie, normal processing is 4 days, expedited processing, as little as half a day for a fee. The issue for a Z visa is how long it takes your employer to get all the documents together and send them to you. If they are well organised they have the appropriate approvals and there SHOULD be little delay. (However, I started work on a tourist visa last year and it took 3 months to get the Z visa!)

GUEST28128 I've heard that China become more strict for foreigner. I also got an invitation to work in China as an animator. But they asked me to work there first to see if i qualify for the job. But i've seen in a lot of different sources, that China is not so inviting nowadays. Is it true ?

China had a short period of strict rules during the Olympics.

In theory, your new employer should provide documentation to get you a work visa. However if you are just working for a short spell, you can probably get away with arriving on a tourist visa and organising a more appropriate visa later.

Get it made clear just how long the trial period is and do not let them extend it once u r here. There are MANY cheating employers in China, in fact cheating employees is the norm, so to avoid being exploited insist on pay when it is due, the trial period being adhered to, a proper visa being organised quickly once you have proved yourself.

My company in Shanghai is applying a working permit for me while im still residing in Malaysia. They asked me to send a health certificate and some documents, so the question is, do i have to go to a specific GP ( appointed by the Chinese Consulate) inorder to obtain one or any GP will do ?

You should not need to complete the health check overseas. It can be done after you arrive. This has been an issue in the past as some employers think you must complete the 'physical exam' (as it is often called, here) to get the visa.

If they insist, just complete the first page where you answer questions about your health and leave the technical ones for the specialist clinics here in China.

GUEST45574 I am a German National working in China. I have a work permit. If I get fired, do I have to leave the country immediately or can I stay until I work things out?

If you have a residency visa it seems you can stay on as there is no immediate way for it to be cancelled. I guess it could be cancelled by the PSB if the employer approached them to do it.
