As a reply to myself and incase this helps anyone else..
I have been told to use these forms for within Australia..

"What do I bring to the health examination?

You must bring the following to your health examination:

* your passport, and a photocopy of the page that includes your photograph, name and date of birth for identification
* your prescription spectacles or contact lenses
* existing specialist and/or other relevant medical reports for known medical conditions
* previous chest x-rays
* your forms:
o Forms 26EH and/160EH for online applications
or
o Forms 26 and/or 160 for paper applications."

http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/26.pdf
Medical examination for an Australian visa (188KB PDF file)

http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/160.pdf
Radiological report on chest x-ray of an applicant for an Australian visa (103KB PDF file).

This will do until I get in to the country and will deal with it once there. but from the Chinese consulate in ACT and other sources it seems these will do fine..
Cost in Aus $293

Hope this helps someone in the future.. will post back once in Tianjin and update this post..

To apply for a residence permit for work (work visa) for a foreign employee who work for a company or Representative office, there are several steps involved. To work as a foreign expert, it is a little different.

There is a diagram in the following link.
http://www.cn-visa.com/zvisa_application.asp

In short, it is:
Step 1: Health certificate
Step 2: Employment license
Step 3: Visa notification letter for Z
Step 4: Exit and apply for a Z
Step 5: Alien employment permit
Step 6: Residence permit for work

Health certificate needs to be got the first step.

As for HK citizens, the application can be started from Step 5 after getting the health certificate.

For those who work for universities or the like, there are NO Alien Employment Permits. Instead, there are Foreign Expert Certificates.

BJLEEO,

Good input and that's a good flow chart you got on the site..

Decided to join and will keep peoples updated on how I go with my Medical cert..

I spent all day on the phone to the consulate here in Australia and talking to the company back in china..
I would say that I will have to do it again once there but at least it gets the process going.. as the company needs a Med. cert for their process of the paper work..

One thing that is missing from above list in BJ's post is the Police Cert..

GUEST87220 Do you need a police certificate certifying you have no criminal record to get a work permit? I have criminal record and I want to work in China but I worry they will check my background. any answers would be greatly appreciated.
