Shanghai food is renowned for cleaness, freshness, delicacy and mild taste with unique flavors.

Here are Shanghainese homemade snacks.

"Jiuniang yuanzi" or "Guihua tian jiuniang" made from sticky rice and sweet wine is one of the favorite snacks of Shanghai residents. It has a special sweet flavor and makes you feel refreshed.

Qing dumplings, or literally Green Dumplings, are made of rice flour. With grass juice inside them, the dumplings appear green and bright. Qing dumplings taste light and aromatic. In Shanghai, eating Qing dumplings on Tomb-sweeping Day is a tradition.

Glutinous Rice Cakes (Zi Fan Gao)

To make the cakes, you must steam glutinous rice and then knead it into glutinous dumplings. Then you add a little bit of salt and stir the rice well. You compress the mixture into cakes and use a kitchen knife to cut them into slices. The slices should then be fried.

GUESTKYLE Oh, the #4 looks delicious. good for breakfast.
Generally speaking, Guangdong food is a bit light; Shanghai food is rather oily; but my favourite Hunan dishes are very spicy, having a strong and hot taste.

Eight Treasure Rice Pudding Cake

On spring festival and other big Chinese traditional big events, one of the desserts that finalises the Shanghainese big family dinner is eight treasure rice pudding cake.

Early Eight-treasure Rice Pudding consists of cooked glutinous rice, sugar and lard, raisins like lotus seeds, Chinese dates, preserved kumquat, longan pulp, preserved cherry, jackfruit, seeds of Job’s tears, and shelled melon seeds, and red and green shredded plum. It not only smells good and tastes delicious, but also carries rich connotations. Lotus seeds stands for harmonious and happy marriage; longan pulp for reunion; kumquat for good luck; Chinese dates for giving birth to the first baby as soon as possible; preserved cherry and jackfruit for a sweet life; seeds of Job’s tears for longevity, elegance and innocence; shelled melon seeds for a regular and peaceful life; red shredded plum for encouragement and blessings; and green shredded plum for pine and longevity

Are you sure that all are home-made? Look nice and I am hungry now. The last one is my favorite.

Yes BBQQ, they used to be homemade when my grandma were alive. Local Shanghainese know where they can enjoy it as casual eat-out just like Shanghainese is familiar with where they can get fashions much cheaper than non-shanghainese.

Here is another : Shanghai rich porridge with Three Yellow (San Huang ) chicken soup.
