Sunnydream, when you said about Japan, made me think a Japanese product called Yomeishu, but with high content of alcohol.

Sake is just alcoholic drink with very high content of alcohol, but Yomeishu have herbs and ginseng.

So Yomeishu is softer than Sake, right? I do not drink liquor and do not know much about it.

I neither smoke nor drink any alcoholic drink. It's just many Chinese moms in my area would buy Yomeishu as part of their postnatal care.

Never heard that before. Postnatal period is very important to women. If they weren't taken good care of, they would have suffered during the later days.

For my family, we have the recipe of herbs prepared by the late herbalist from Guangzhou. He and his brother migrated to Palembang (Indonesia) but the business was not good and they migrated to Malaysia (Malaya at that time) around 1920s. My mom, sisters, in-laws etc all consumed the herbs for their postnatal.

Wan,

Chinese women in confinement are taken care of very well. There are many taboos. They can not move, wash hair or do something against their parents.
