Those are old "school of thought" dear Sunnydream. Now people have changed. the 40 days waiting period after giving birth only a few traditionalists are practising it now. Last time there was no hot shower.

It's true. But some parents still stick to their "old school of thoughts". In cities, many girls start to hire Yue Sao (confinement nurse) to help them through their confinement period.

The confinement nurse have knowledge of taking care of puerpera and newly-born babies. An experienced confinement nurse earns more than CNY 10000 in big cities.

Well here we still have government nurses from nearby clinic or hospital that make home-visit, to bathe the newborn etc. Also private nurses that offer better care during confinement such as how to "wrap" the baby properly etc. What most people don't follow anymore is the 40 or 44-day waiting period. In those days the new moms need to eat only certain food, and even won't be allowed to take shower.

You are right. I was told that women in some countries just rest less than a week after giving birth. Different races have different physique.

The words should be: Gloomy you can ask the elders...
It's not about race and physique, Sunnydream but rather for health and hygiene.

Wan,

I guess that foreign women have better physique. That's why they needn't be confined for a month.

Wan, once I asked my mum, she told me about the one month confinement after giving birth to baby. So comes the Chinese words "坐月子". Here, the word "月" means a month.

For government employees, they are given 2 months confinement and 3 months confinement as an option with full salary.
