Yesterday, I bought some shrimps in the supermarket. Before I got them, they were dead and placed on the ice. I just boiled them for a minute and remembered to add cooking wine, ginger and liquor to get rid of the earthy smell. However, I failed.

Then I googled that the entrails (black thread) in the shrimps should be removed before being boiled. However, I tasted boiled shrimps at restaurant. They didn't get rid of the black threads but there wasn't earthy smell.

Do you guys have any method to get rid of the earthy smell of shrimps?

Try to add some lemon juice. I don't cook shrimps on my own. This is what I found on the internet.

To add slices of onion and Shao Xing yellow wine to eliminate earthy smell. Sea Shrimps taste much better than shirmps from fresh water.

Thank you for your guys' suggestions. I tried to add yellow wine and liquor to get rid of earthy smell but failed. Ginger was also added.

Next time, I will try to add lemon juice or onion slices and see if they work.

Try to buy marine shrimps/prawns, you won't have that kind of smell. Although the saltwater shrimps died the moment they are brought in the trawler, but they can last (with its freshness) for five hours without ice.

Wan, the supermarket I usually go to doesn't have many shrimps. It was lucky that I found some fresh shrimps (they were alive) last time. But I didn't know whether they are freshwater or saltwater shrimps.

I think I need to seafood market to buy shrimps. There are more choices.

Dear Sunnydream, as I used to stay not far from the sea (my hometown), and many friends were fishermen. That's why I know about types of fish and prawns/shrimps. The seawater prawns are always the best. Have you tried lobster before?
