In 1960s during the infamous cold war between North and South Vietnam US recruited civilians to fight in the Vietnam War. Those did not turn up for the service might face imprisonment. The world famous boxer, Cassius Clay later named Muhammad Ali was stripped off his world heavy weight championship because he not only against the imposed war but also did not go for the military consignment. In 1973 the US pulled off its army and the North and South Vietnam were reunified under the socialist-communist regime (officially in 1975).

Ok, I see it, Wan. I think all countries are the same. When they are short of soldiers, they will force the civilians to join the army.

Do you mean China? I didn't take military training when I was in college. I didn't know why. Perhaps, our campus was too small to accommodate all freshmen to do military training.

Instead, we did broadcast exercises in every early morning. One month later, the college held a welcome party for us. We all freshmen did broadcast exercises to compete for the top three winners.

Next year, we moved to a new campus which was big enough to accommodate all freshmen to do military traning at the same time.

How lucky we were!
