![]() | Princess Kate gave birth to a baby boy on July 22. It’s said that she will go back to her parents’ home for six weeks. I guess whether she is going to spend her confinement time at her parents’ home. After searching on the internet, I have understood that foreign women seldom spend their confinement time. They just rest for a week and go back to their regular life, shopping, working or taking care of their babies. Compared with foreign women, Chinese women have to spend their confinement time at home after they give birth to babies. Usually, the have around three months’ maternity leave. In the first 42 days (six weeks), they are confined at home. Meanwhile, they have to abide by some traditional rules. 1. Never go out in the first six weeks. They have to lie on the bed most of the time. 2. Never wash and comb their hair. They usually wear a hat. 3. Never brush their teeth. 4. Never have bath. 5. Never eat solid and cold food. Fruit is forbidden. 6. Never touch cold water. 7. Never cut their fingernails. 8. Control the amount of salt. It is believed that they will not have enough milk to feed their babies if they eat too much salt. 9. Eat pig’s feet and other food that can stimulate the secretion of milk. 10. Eat eggs and brown sugar every day. Eggs can provide protein and brown sugar can replenish blood. 11. In some areas, women shouldn’t be visited when they are in confinement. Why do Chinese women have to abide these rules? Their mothers tell them that these rules have been observed for thousands of years. They exist for some reason. If they don’t abide by the rules, they will suffer when they become old. Their mothers always tell them that they would spend their confinement again if they had a chance. Hereby, they wouldn’t suffer from some illnesses. I am afraid that William might divorce Kate if she spends her confinement time like traditional Chinese women. Who is willing to stay with a woman who don’t wash hair, teeth and bath for six weeks? ![]() |

![]() | GUEST20101, You can take it as rubbish. I think that you are not a Chinese, right? If you were born in China, you wouldn't have taken it all as rubbish. More importantly, the western and eastern girl have different physical conditions. |

![]() | Dear BBQQ, there are things we can follow our tradition and of course there are things we need to relinquish. Whatever the reasons are, not brushing the teeth for 42 days obviously an old tradition we need to abandon. Even gurgling with mouthwash is not enough, but then in those days, only salt water was used. It's not about modern or old, western or eastern but rather natural hygiene. Furing your confinement, would you abstain from brushing your teeth for 42 days? Wan |

![]() | Wan, I will invite a woman who master the modern knowledge of taking care after-birth women and newly-born babies to take care of me and my baby. I wish that my mom wouldn't oppose me. According to what I find on the internet, after-birth women can brush their teeth with warm salty water. The brush they use should be made of "soft hair". |

![]() | Dear BBQQ, not everything on the net is correct. I would advise you to see obstet for post-natal care. At the same time there are things we can follow our traditional ways too. It is indeed good to blend. Wan |
