Cockroach is the most disgusting animal in the world. I, like other timid girls, hate cockroach very much. I can’t believe that someone keeps 200,000 cockroaches in his bedroom as his pets. Kyle Kandilian, a 20 years old student in the USA, has fallen in love with the cockroaches since he first saw the Madagascar hissing cockroaches. He asked his mom whether he could raise a pet cockroach. At the beginning, his mom refused him. As time goes by, his parents accepts his unusual habit. So far, he has raised more than 200000 cockroaches from 130 species in his bedroom. Once Kyle was asked why he didn’t raise a rabbit as his pet, he said he couldn’t stand the smell of the mammals. He takes his cockroaches to reptile and insect shows and sell them online to those cockroach enthusiasts. According to him, some rare ones, like rhino roaches that will live 10 to 15 years, are sold for 150 to 200 USD. His cockroach business makes him to pay his college tuition debt. According to Wikipedia, cockroaches were once used as medicine. In the 1870s, many New Orleanians had great faith in a remedy of boiled cockroach tea. The Compendium of Materia Medica claims that ground cockroaches can cure wounds caused by pests and snakes. Boiled cockroaches dispel pathogenic wind and allay fever. It’s said that eating cockroach can cure some types of cancers. Cockroach is one of the oldest insects in the world. It lives together with dinosaurs but survives until today. According to the biologists, cockroaches will be the only survivors if the global nuclear war occurs. Humans can endure 5 rems nuclear radiation. Once the nuclear radiation exceeds 800 rems, humans will die. The cockroaches can endure 9000 to 105000 rems nuclear radiation. Thus, the cockroaches can survive the nuclear war.

I am so sorry, Wan. Cockroach is a kind of insect rather than animal.

Wan, The insect is a kind of animal, I think. The animals are divided into two kinds: one with a backbone and one without a backbone. The first kind includes fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The second kind includes worms, sponges, mollusks, insects, etc. According to modern biological classification, there are eight major taxonomic ranks (domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species). As you can see it, the animal kingdom has phylum, class, order, family, genus and species. The insect is a class of invertebrates within the arthropod phylum under the animal kingdom. Sunnydream just didn’t specify it clearly.

Dear Raindrop Although almost all living creatures are widely categorised under animal kingdom, including human (as also agreed by Desmond Morris) but I doubt it is easily accepted by majority of us. If someone says, yesterday I saw an animal driving a car, he was the manager of an XXX Company, I am sure people will laugh with such a statement. You may argue that certain biology books, man is classified as a mammal animal. Generally, insects are creatures with 3-section body, three-pair of jointed legs. Thus insects are animals that people don't call them animals but insects. Have we ever thought of a taxi that no longer called a car? Wan

Wan, They will laugh if you say animal driving a car. But it's true that we belong to the animal kingdom. They laugh because they think they are more advanced and in higher level than other animal species.

Dear Raindrop, humans are humans and they are indeed not animals as they can plan, talk, write. But people are easily influenced by someone like Charles Darwin with his expedition to South America and came out with a journal about On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection. Just like the theory of Big Bang, how the universe was formed. To our knowledge no explosion brings construction but destruction. Until today it remained a theory. I beg to differ. Wan

Interesting post, Wan. There are several theories on how the universe is formed. All are just guesses.
