The growth and dynamism of China. There is construction everywhere. Beijing is a government city. Shanghai is a much more dynamic commercial city. Have a 100 ruble note with a picture of Lenin from a 1992 trip to Russia. That banknote is worthless today. A 100 RMB banknote has value.

My Tianjin girlfriend and I took the night train from Tianjin to Beijing central train station (11RMB ticket, 2 hour trip). Outside the station people were scattered everywhere sleeping on the ground. We went to get a taxi to a nearby hostel but were astonished at the 50RMB price tag they were asking. ... Details

During the past year, travelling anywhere in China is dangerous. Travelling agencies hit their all-time low and scenic spots can only be appreciated thru pictures. The SARS outbreak did a lot of damage not only to the holiday spirit, but also on the freedom to roam!

we went to the Great Wall, on Monday, July 8, 2003. It was about a 2 hour drive outside of Beijing. The Summer Palace is a great place to visit, as it is steeped in history, and the buildings are amazing! There are many problems, all of which involve strange little men who run up to you, trying to sell you objects from Watches to Painting Kits.
