Fujian, a picturesque province on China’s southeastern coast, offers breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and historical treasures. For first-time visitors, these travel tips will ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:

Plan Your Visit Seasonally: Fujian’s mild climate makes it a year-round destination, but spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather. Avoid peak travel times like Chinese New Year for less crowded attractions.

Explore Iconic Sites: Don’t miss the UNESCO-listed Tulou clusters, ancient earthen buildings that showcase unique architecture. The scenic Wuyi Mountains and the historic city of Quanzhou are also must-visit spots.

Savor Local Cuisine: Fujian’s seafood is a highlight. Try dishes like Buddha Jumps Over the Wall and oyster omelets. Local tea culture is also a treat, so indulge in some oolong or Tieguanyin tea.

Learn Basic Mandarin Phrases: While English is spoken in tourist areas, knowing a few Mandarin phrases can enhance your interactions with locals.

Stay Connected: Download a VPN before traveling to access popular apps and websites.

Use Public Transport: Fujian has a well-connected transportation network. High-speed trains and buses make it easy to travel between cities.

Respect Local Customs: When visiting temples or traditional villages, dress modestly and follow local etiquette.

Essential Fuzhou Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors
By SANETRAVELLER | 12/18/2024 9:46:13 PM

Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province in southeastern China, is a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, making it an exciting destination for first-time visitors. Here are some essential travel tips to help you make the most of your trip:

Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Fuzhou is from March to May and September to November when the weather is mild and pleasant. Summers can be hot and humid, while winters are generally mild but occasionally chilly.

Language: Mandarin is the official language, but the local dialect, Fuzhouhua, is also commonly spoken. While some locals may speak a little English, it’s helpful to learn basic Mandarin phrases or use a translation app for easier communication.

Transportation: Fuzhou has a well-developed public transportation system, including buses and a metro line. Taxis are readily available but make sure to have your destination written in Chinese, as many drivers may not understand English. Renting a bike or using ride-hailing apps like DiDi is also a convenient option.

Popular Attractions: Don’t miss visiting historical and cultural sites like West Lake Park, Fujian Museum, and Three Lanes and Seven Alleys – a collection of ancient streets showcasing traditional architecture. Nature lovers should explore Mount Gu, a scenic area with temples and panoramic views.

Cuisine: Fuzhou is known for its unique Fujianese cuisine, featuring fresh seafood, light broths, and distinctive flavors. Try local specialties such as Fuzhou fish balls, lychee pork, and Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, a rich soup made from a variety of ingredients. Street food is also an excellent way to dive into local flavors.

Shopping: For souvenirs, visit the Fuzhou International Trade Center or the local markets to pick up items like tea, silk products, and traditional handicrafts. Fuzhou is also famous for its Fujian tea, particularly oolong, which makes for a great gift.

Cultural Etiquette: Be mindful of local customs, such as bowing slightly when greeting someone. It’s also common to share food in groups, and refusing an offer of food or drink can be seen as impolite. Show respect for local traditions and be prepared to take your shoes off when entering someone’s home.

Connectivity: Wi-Fi is widely available in most hotels and public spaces. However, international internet access can sometimes be limited, so consider using a VPN if you need access to websites like Google or Facebook.

By keeping these travel tips in mind, your first visit to Fuzhou will be a smooth and enjoyable experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the city's fascinating mix of history, culture, and modernity.

By ADAMYOUNG | 9/13/2014 9:43:00 PM

I have some tips for travelling Xiamen for these gus who want to go there by DIY tour:
1\ Hotel Booking: The best location should be around South Putuo Temple. Becasue these major spots are near around, and you can take buses easily.
2\ Time arrangement: You can spent about 4-5 days to explore Xiamen's major spots, which I means: South Putuo Temple, Gulangyu Island, and Binhai Road, Other spots are very small in my mind. If you have enough time, you can also explore some other spots.
You can explore South Putuo Temple and Xiamen University in the first day;
And then one or two days will spent in Gulangyu Island;
Then you can ride bicycle with your friends on the Binhai Road, and there are many facilities you can play along that way.
3\Dont forget to enjoy the wonderful food when you explore the city.
Here is a street named Taiwan Delicious Food Street near Gulangyu. You can eat many kinds of foods in that street after explore Gulangyu Island.

It is also a nice experience to walk the back streets in Xiamen City. You feel safe even at 10 in the evening. Most salespeople are patient and accomodating. And the merchandise quality is of high quality.

choosing a hotel
By ELSA | 5/2/2005 2:14:52 PM

My choice is a middle class (3 star) hotel. This time I chose Xiamen Plaza which is along major transportation routes and next to a bus terminal and a popular shopping center with exciting fast foods and Walmart. The manager-Ms. Sue is also English speaking.
