I met a woman 2 years ago, through another Chinese person I went to school with. She met a seemingly rich American by being his tour guide. They married and she brough her and her daughter (with her first husband) to the US. After that, she discovered that he seemed rich 'cause he spent "dollars" for yuan while he was in China. But in the states, he didn't really have that important of a job, and all his extra cash went towards weed. So they got divorced.

"...love the person you marry" - if you marry them for $$, sometimes it doesn't always end like fairy tales.

Sorry for the miscommunications, Elcabron. We are talking about 2 types of girls. In different situation. I am talking about poor village girls marrying foreigners to get out of the poverty trap. In a way they also marry for money. How else can they hope to overcome being dirt poor. So sad really. Marry someone against their will in order to help their families. I definitely won't labelled them prostitues. Neither are they heroines. They are filial, to say the least. Having said that, my arguments stops here. Period! And my apologies to you, Elcabron.

A final comment on this sometimes unfortunate topic.

MAIL ORDER BRIDES
This is what it is called where I come from. Ususaly the only people making money are the agencies supporting this type of offer.

The often pooh and ignorant girls submitting themselves to this humiliation as a way of helping thier familes out of poverty often end up in a much more miserable existance with an abusive husband far from the ones they love with no support from family of friends.

Some of course find love or something in between resembling happiness. but this of course is nothing new. Plenty of people marry for LOVE and come up short all the time. Take a look at the divorce rate in any country around the world today.

Whilst flipping back to the older threads, I came across this thread. I find this so interesting that I can't help re-visiting & commenting on it - albeit very late.

Love and marraige are 2 different matters altogether. One is a state of emotion, the other a commitment.
I my view, 2 persons can fall in love but do not need to be married. Marriage is the decision of 2 persons to live together, hopefully through thick & thin, looking out for each other and maybe raise a family together. It is a contract mainly for the security of the gal - sorry.
Ideally one likes to marry the person he/she loves. But it is not a necessity. People enjoy falling in love, romance & dating. They should continue to enjoy this process for as long as they can - why get married at all ?
Some very poor people cannot afford to enjoy the process of falling in love. Marriage is a way out to improve their lives - not love. So be it - nothing to do with meal market or whatever. And it is not prostitution. The gal is contracted/ committed to the man when she marries him. And she doesn't sell herself to any Tom, Dick or Elcab... who might be able to afford to pay.
Of cos, the modern society has changed so much that this concept could vary from society to society & to different people.
