I also feel sympathetic with you, Chris. I have tried the experience of sitting in train for 2 days over 2 nights, that is really terrible, after which I got a cold. :(. Anyway, I think trains more comfortable and safe than coaches.

I hate train journey, but it is the only convenient and inexpensive way to take me home. You know that the first time I took train as the day I went to university. It took me more than 30 hours to get my destination. One time was enough to make me hate train journey. :(

Well, my longest train ride was 28 hours (if I remember rightly) Guilin to Zhengzhou, but I had a hard sleeper ticket, so it was very comfortable. 30 hours? Or 2 days and 2 nights? Ugh. Horrible. Fortunately the railways ministry has been speeding up trains over the last few years. I like the trains, but I'd love them even more if they were faster.

I do not have a favorite city yet and it is impossible to judge when you have seen so little of the country. I've been to Amoy, Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenyang. This time I begin in Guangzhou and travel for three weeks. Maybe I will have a favorite place then.... :)

Yes, Sanya and Haikou are really excellent spots to visit. I haven't thought that Chengdu is in the love of so many people. I must visit it one day.

I will BBQQ, I know Chengdu is reputed as a city that you'll be reluctant to leave once you get there. The recreational industry, such as teahouse, Mah-jong, and the 'lazy' bosses (who always raised their legs) can be easy to be seen. Maybe it is a good place for living.
