Sanlu's contaminated milk powder has made 1253 babies sick with kidney stones and two have died. Feel sad for those infants!

According to the news, the tainted milk powder was produced by Sanlu Group, China's dairy giant. The powder was found to contain melamine, a chemical raw material believed to cause the condition. Sanlu claimed that some illegal dairy farmers added the melamine to the raw milk to make protein content of the milk higher. The police has detained 19 people who were connected with this scandal.

" Authorities have so far seized 2,176 tons of milk powder in the warehouse of Sanlu Group. Some 8,218 tons on the market had been recalled, said Shijiazhuang Vice Mayor Li Jinlu on Monday.

Another 700 tons of the milk powder was on their way back to Shijiazhuang, Li added. All the tainted milk powder will be destroyed."

On the other hand, Sanlu has made a formal apology to the victims of this scandal. They promise that they will try their best to help those parents cure their babies.

Two babies with kidney stones receive medical treatment.

Sanlu claims that the melamine was added to the milk by "illegal farmers". Why is Sanlu buying milk from illegal farmers? Heads must roll over this, and not just those of a bunch of hapless "illegal farmers" either. Sanlu should be taken to the cleaners.

WCTMAN, I am also curious about this. However, Sanlu said that some dairy farmers added melamine to the raw milk. I am wondering if Sanlu examines the raw milk carefully. It is easy for Sanlu to know if the farmers added the melamine. They claim that they have 1100 inspection processes. If they couldn't know if there was melamine in the milk powder, there was only one answer----all the inpection processes were useless.

Here are some doubts raised by an expert:

No.1 Where is the source of the melamine? If infant formula milk was contaminated, what about others? Are they ok? Or they have been contaminated too but haven't been disclosed yet.

No.2 Sanlu claimed that it was those illegal dairy farmers who added the melamine in the raw milk just for seeking profits (adding melamine in the milk can make the protein content higher). However, did they examine the raw milk carefully? I can't believe that a giant dairy company couldn't find out if the milk powder was contaminated by melamine.

No.3 Where did the "illegal farmers" get melamine? How could they know adding melamine could make protein content appear higher in the milk?

No.4 Actually, in the middle of the March, a consumer complained that blood was found in her baby's urine. Sanlu said that they had visited that consumer and required the local inspection bureau to check the milk powder and the result was that the milk was ok. In June, more cases have been found and some victims went to hospital. Then they spent more than a month to find the reason. Finally, they got the conclusion on August 1st that some illegal farmer added melamine in the milk and they were they criminal. However, they didn't disclose this when they found the problem. Recently, more and more babies had kidney stones. Then Sanlu realized that paper couldn't wrap the fire so that they made a declaration that it was the illegal farmers' fault.

They have found out the problem. Why didn't they disclose it and solve it immediately? Maybe, they hoped that the problem would disappear by itself.

No.5 Sanlu claimed that about 700 tons milk powder had been contaminated. Couldn't believe it! How much fresh milk do they need to make 700 tons milk powder? To get the fresh milk, how many farmers do they need to cooperate with? Maybe, those farmers intrigued together to add melamine in the milk. Was it possible? If those "illegal farmers" knew that adding melamine could make the protein content appear higher when tested, what about other dairy farmers, I mean, those who supply raw milk to Yili, Mengniu, Guangming etc? Do they add melamine in the raw milk? If they do, that is horrible.

Even it was those illegal farmers who added melamine in the milk, Sanlu should be responsible for this. Is it a coincidence?

Not only Sanlu but also other well-known dairy companies have been found to add melamine in the milk. Hong Kong has found that Yili icecream also contains melamine. Maybe that expert is right. It is a "common sense" that the dairy producers add melamine in their dairy products. It is reported that more than 1600 babies have suffered kidney stones and three have died.

GUEST8694 BBQQ, the latest news said that more than 6000 babies suffered from kidney stones, not 1600. And the director of Sanlu has been detained. Sanlu should be responsible for this matter.

Too bad. It is said that melamine has been found in some liquid milk too. It seems that adding melamine is very common in those dairy producers. What should we drink now?

The number of the sick babies is growing very quickly. So far, about 13000 babies have been treated in the hospitals and 4 are dead. Too horrible!

GUEST4178 Not only in the milk powder but also in milk sugar and biscuit are also found melamine. Now the other countries have stopped importing Chinese dairy products.

Even if the company makes the excuse that some illegal dairy farmers added the melamine to the raw milk, the blame still lies on them. A company, especially companies producing products such as food and medicines or anything being taken in by humans should have very strict quality control. Aren't they supposed to check the product from receiving to shipping?

The Singapore has found that White Rabbit creamy candy contains melamine. At first, the maker said that they would investigate this matter. Now they require all the retailers, supermarkets to stop selling White Rabbit creamy candy. Why do they do this? If they don't add melamine in the candy, they needn't stop selling White Rabbit creamy candy.

"Even if the company makes the excuse that some illegal dairy farmers added the melamine to the raw milk, the blame still lies on them."

Agreed. The company has no excuse for this scandal. San Lu, Meng Niu, Yi Li, Guang Ming and Nestle have been found out that their products contain melamine. Seems that it is an usual practice to add melamine in dairy products.

I never believed for a moment that the so called illegal farmers were responsible for adding anything to their milk.
Every batch is tested at the point of delivery for contamination and quality.
The testing doesn’t just happen with food but with for example coal and other mineral products as quality can and does vary from batch to batch.
If anything has been added it is in the production process.
All of these companies would employ their own “in house” chemists to run these tests on a daily basis.
Dodger.
