Google is much better than Baidu though I don't use google to write articles. It is convenient for those who are in need of English materials.

I often use Google Scholar all the time for my literature search. It also provides bibliographical citation in IEEE format.

Do you know Google Library project? It plans to scan more and more books and make e-book copies. Then more and more people can read these books easily. Unfotunately, this project has been opposed by some nations. They are worried about copyright issue.

Copyright issue is a never ending issue. For example, a writer will oppose when a library buys a book and then share with many people and such a away limits one's income. On the other hand, library is protected by certain enactments that allow it to provide free information to its users.

Wan,

The authors already earn money from the royalties. Google should ask the author's permission before it scans the books and change them into E-books. And it should pay the authors if necessary.

It depends on localities. Some publishers only printed the books for 2000 copies while some would print 20000 copies. In Malaysia, writers won't get rich as there are small number of buyers. A writer usually gets 8-10% from the proceeds of the sales which he will get by the year end. Unlike Rowling of the famous Harry Potter series, the books were printed in million of copies in various languages, thus she became a millionaire overnight.

If you write a book, you may either get royalty or token, where new budding writers would choose token rather than royalty. How much is the token? In Malaysia maybe just 5000, what can you do with that 5000, buy a car? Haha

Dear Wan,

I am not gifted in writing. But there are many writers who make good profit from writing novels online. First, they write novels online. Second, some publishers find them and promise them to publish their novels when their novels become popular online. Third, they sign with some websites to write more novels for online users. Do you know how much they earn per month? More than 10000 RMB. Those signed writers usually can earn more than 100000 RMB per year. If they are lucky, their novels might be chosen by some directors. The directors will pay them a great deal of money if they want to make the novel into TV series.

Take the author of the Secret of the Grave Robber for example. He writes nine books and earns 15,800,000 RMB from the royalties. Then you can imagine how many books are sold out. It is estimated that the total sales volume is over 10 million. You may not know that he is not a professional writer. He once worked as art designer, program developer and international trade salesman. What great success he has made! However, not all writers (neither professional or amateur) can be as lucky as him.

Writing is not as easy as we think. Those famous online writers have to write more than 5000-6000 words per day since they have contracts with the websites.

There are countless millions of writers in the world. But there is only one J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter.

What you said is correct but depends on locality. One singer in Malaysia barely makes ends meet until she gets Chinese audience and she becomes a millionaire overnight. If I know Chinese and I could write historical fiction probably I will become a globetrotter now. But reality is no writer in Malaysia is rich as we have a handful of buyers and limited number of publications. Local publishers will be happy if they can print and sell 5000 copies of books, most of the time, they managed to publish less than 2000 copies.

I have been observing Malaysian book trade which can never be an industry for the past 10 years, and every year Book Development Council with Publishers Association will have Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair that attracts around 2 million visitors. Many a time, publishers and book distributors instead of introducing new books, are selling old stocks for school children with not so cheap prices.

The National Library of Malaysia tries to boost book production by introducing Writers' Fund where selected writers are given MYR25000 each where they need to submit to the National Library of Malaysia. But who gets the benefit? Publishers as these writers need to buy his own books from the publishers at discounted rates.

I often buy books at the airport in China while waiting for my flight. The books sold are cheaper than purchasing direct from the publishers in Malaysia because in China, producing 20000 copies are normal and nominal.

Why not find a translator to translate your books into Chinese? Of course you have to find an experienced one. A good translator can translate the soul of the writer's books.

That is only one of the theories that I have, knowing Chinese language. But I need to face reality, is my article marketable? Even my responding article(s) to you may disgust by many. Anyway, I'm starting to write a historical fiction where I have completed in 2 series under the title of Wan Wushu. Wan Wushu is a martial arts exponent who studied at a place of many arts called Mohenjo Daro which was very famous during the Indus Civilisation. The first series is about Wan Wiushu and the Sea Devils. How he sought revenge when his pregnant met a tragic death planned by the Sea Devils. Along the way the story tells the names of places that existed during the Hindu and Buddhist empires in the Malay Archipelago.

Now I'm searching for a good publisher on Malaysia.
