GUEST23210 Working experience:
For 20 years, I’ve been a freelance translator of technical documents, and my clients are mostly manufacturers who export their products worldwide. These manufacturers make various machinery, auto parts, air-conditioners, LED products, decorative lamps, cleaning machines & consumables, packing & printing materials, apparel & shoes, leather & leather goods, etc.
From time to time, I have clients from abroad coming to visit their suppliers and I serve as their escort interpreter. This is an interesting job and I enjoy working as an agent to overcome the language barrier and see them accomplish their mission in Guangzhou, China.

GUEST23210 Communications:
Cell phone is always a quick way to reach people and to test whether your future translator speaks English well. However, it’s also strongly recommended that you send an email to explain the nature and purpose of your visit, particularly your line of business and your potential contact in China. If you are new here and expect to establish contact with manufacturers, it would be convenient to include your company website link in your email. It’s the best way for your translator to learn which line of business you are in and what kind of suppliers might be the right target.

GUEST23210 About the translation service:
When you plan your visit to China, I guess you know already that this country is actually a big factory, where everything that you can think of is possibly made and sold here. I’m personally interested in the development of new products. If you are looking for something technically complicated and the interpreting requires a technical background, I might be the right choice to you. I’m one of the few Chinese people who have been trained as a translator with a science background, and I’ve been doing technical translation for quite some time.

This young man is an Indian school decoration contractor who arrived in Guangzhou on the first day of 2018 for office and lab furniture, aluminum windows and doors and playground equipment. For 3 days we made a lot of phone calls and visited quite a number of factories. He was happy with his visit and with my services when he left Guangzhou for his home contry.

A Visit to Fancy Cake Stand Makers in Guzhen, Zhongshan City
Only eight days after a visit with Canadian customers to Guzhen, the lighting town, for a specific lighting product, I came again with another customer to source a fancy cake stand. It's hardly imaginable that lamp fixures and fancy cake stands are made in the same kind of factories, and some of the parts look so similar to each other that they can be used for both purposes. We visited the lighting fixture & cake stand maker's factories, and asked their permit to take a couple of pictures. The following is a picture from the maker's website.

A Most Embarrassing Interpreting Experience
This customer from Columbia, Jose by name, had been in contact with me for quite a long time and I had even managed to figure out how to pronounce his Spanish name. And when I drove to Guangzhou Baiyun Airport to pick him up on April 26 and tried to sound out what exactly he was looking for, there seemed nothing unusual. He was just about to visit one potential supplier, the address of which, he did not know yet at that moment. The next day, we met again in the lobby of his hotel, China Hotel, a marriot hotel near the Yuexiu Park, and I drove him to his supplier and, a most embarrassing thing happened: his product is a medicine that cures cancer and he wanted to discuss with his supplier about the production details, that is, how the raw materials shall be preserved, how the production facilities shall be kept up to GMC standard and how the production process shall be conducted. Plenty of technical details that are beyond my understanding, even in Chinese! It must be admitted, the guy is really nice, and his supplier, though rather poor in English, is willing to help. Through much exchange of views on the understanding of each technical term, we managed to settled the business, and my customer was happy to finish his business trip to Guangzhou. However, it's no less than a lesson that every interpreter must learn: communicate as fully as possible with your client before the start of service to avoid any interpreting accidents.

American Client Visiting Canton Fair for Car Seat Fabrics and Leather
Mike is a car seat maker from the United States. He came to the Canton Fair for car seat fabrics that he needs badly. The Canton Fair did not let him down and he found two fabric makers, one of which is located in Jiangsu Province. We then decided to visit the fabric maker in the hope to find more similar factories. After landing at Changzhou Airport, we hired a car and drove from Changzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi until Changshu. We did find some fabric makers and flew back to Guangzhou with some interesting leads.
