| "Carlos, postcards are too cheap for Chinese people. If you do not bring them good souvenirs, they might be angry with you." Yea, in addition to buying souvenirs I hate the thought that friendship and "face" are also for sale. None of my friends has dropped me out from their "friend list" for having only a post card instead of some souvenirs. I guess that is one thing that makes us friends. To show that the other is always in your heart and mind is enough. My wife just flied to China and her baggages were loaded with all kinds of souvenirs from Finland. She took only the most important personal things, all other space in her baggages was filled with souvenirs. She also took a lot more money than needed because she must give red envelopes to almost everyone she knows to show "respect and friendship", you can read this as same as "to buy face, to show that you are economically on top". | Carlos, what happened to your friends and your wife's friends might be called "culture difference". Chinese people care about their 'face'. But I hate this very much. If my friends dare tell me they don't like souvenirs I give to them, I will tell what I think. "Listen, I bring you some souvenirs because I think you are my best friends and I never forget about you. If you do not like it, please give it back to me. Someone else will love it very much." Next time your wife takes so many souvenirs back home, you just tell her "please tell your friends that I am already broke and can not afford to buy them". |

It’s weird to ask such a question. However, I really want to hear your answers. Every time I go out for a journey, my mom always tells me to buy some tourist souvenirs for my uncles, aunts and even my best friends. As a matter of fact, I hate buying tourist souvenirs. It’s not because I am stingy. It’s because the tourist souvenirs sold in the scen...
My answer is in yes, because your mom said true and I believe that elderly people are role models for next generation. |

| Culture difference, I know, Lonely. However, I still don´t like it. Anyway, no matter how much I dislike that kind of culture, the last thing I would do to my wife is to make her to loose her face in front of her family and friends. And when we travel there together there will be twice as much bags to fill... ;=) Carlos |

My religion teaches me that we should respectful to elders and yes very filial. I think you should buy respectful and costly gift for your friends. |

| For me respectful, yes but not costly (although the term costly is still debatable). I'd rather buy something meaningful although it is cheap. Wan |

Atta, That I do not follow my mom's advice to buy them expensive but low quality gifts doesn't mean that I do not respect my mom. I do respect my parents but I won't take their wrong advice. |

| Wan gives a good suggestion. Something cheap but meaningful are better than something expensive and of low quality. |
