So they test the food in front of you? That's embarrassing.

I see. A few days ago, I watched a documentary about Summer Palace. It is said that 128 dishes are prepared for a meal for the Empress Ci Xi. However, Ci Xi won't eat all of them. She just tastes several dishes. And she won't eat the same dish more than 3 times. Why? It's the old tradition that has been observed by the emperors for years. They don't want others to know what dishes they prefer most. Otherwise, some people might put poison in their favorite dishes.

Forgot to say! Li Lianying, an eunuch favored by Ci Xi, always tastes the dishes first. Then Ci Xi eats the dishes.

BBQQ, it's the arrogance on her part rather than fearing of poisoning.

Haha, all Chinese emperors are arrogant. Otherwise, they won't call them sons of god.

If they were really sons of god, they wouldn't perish in 1911. But it's interesting to see how they managed to maintain feudalism far too long.

One of the students that I supervised wrote an academic essay "Islam in China" that started from Tang Dynasty (618-907) that initiated me to understand both the Old Tang Chronicle (Jiu Tang Shu 旧唐书) and the New Tang Chronicle (Xin Tang Shu 新唐书) where the words such as 永徽二年,大食王豃密莫末腻始遣使者,自言王大食氏,有国三十四年,传二世 can't really be explained by ordinary Putonghua laoshi.
