 | Wan, The ancient Chinese is difficult for us to understand their meaning. The general meaning is "The king of Dayi sends some emissaries to the Tang Empire in 651 AD. The king says he is king of Dayi and Dayi has existed for 34 years. And he is the second king of Dayi." Dayi refers to the Arab Empire (630-1258 ). Sometimes, it refers to Arabs and Muslims in Iran. |

Wan Wan, 大食 is transliterated form of Tajik or Tay (Persian). I found that there are many other forms such as dà shí；dà sì；tǎ sì；tǎ yì；tǎ shí. I am totally confused now. |

| Dear BBQQ Actually I'm trying to write a short article to explain to some friends who are studying about "the Coming of the Arabs to Guangzhou"; about Jiu Tang Shu (旧唐书) and Xin Tang Shu (新唐书) and its relationship with Wan Ge Su (宛葛素) and Hanmi Momoni (豃密莫末腻) which I think is in Arabic means the Commander of the Faithful. I know nothing about Putonghua thus I tried to get some other friends to shed me some lights. In those days, the Persians and the Arabs are called 大食 probably they used to eat with various kinds of food, thus dashi shows their way of eating habit. It's just my hunch. Today, if you go to Arab countries, they are still the same big "eaters". With your knowledge of Putonghua, maybe we could highlight certain things that you may know about China. Thank you kindly. | OMG! I don't know the Arabs are big eaters let alone they gain the name Da Shi for this. Wan, I did a serious search on the internet and didn't find any Chinese material that claim the Arabs are named as Da Shi for they eat too much. |

| Perhaps you have not been to Arabia. They have full of exotic food. It is just my hunch that the Chinese in those days observed how foreigners eat. As you may understand, there are commonly accepted words derived from Persian-Arab, such as ahong (from akhund) as well as some Hui surnames. Among the northwest Muslims they use the word namaz instead of libai. Wan |
