Good question, Wan. I'd like to know Mark's answer. I think he has no time to think whether he is stronger than him. Even he knows he can't win the battle, he has to fight. If he wins, he is a hero in his girlfriend's mind. If not, her girlfriend will be touched because he already did his best to defend her.

In a word, he has no choice but fight him.

Well I would stand my ground and fight but only if it is a fair fight! one man vs. one man if he has any weapons on him or if he brings in other people than no I would have to find another strategy to deal with the situation.

fortunately this has never happened. I know how to defend myself but again hopefully it will never come to this.

Circumstance really dictates, however, at the least sign of hostility, I would shoot the thief dead.

A submissive thief would deal with law enforcement.

Griz, is it proper to shoot him dead? You can hurt him with your gun so that he can't run away. But I don't think it is a good idea to take him down.

Usually a thief is not that hostile, bu a robber does. Should a thief become hostile, it is the right of every citizen to defend oneself. I don't have a gun and never own one. But I do have many kinds of knives, from table knife to butcher's.

Wan,

Are you sure that you use all your knives skillfully? What if the robber had a gun? Is there a ban that people can't have weapons at home in your country?

Anything can be turned to weapons, such as baseball bat, flower pot, etc. Otherwise stipulates by law, kitchen knives are allowed at homes while butcher knife usually is kept in its own scabbard. 9" knife is good enough for slaughtering animals such as water buffalo, cow or even sheep.
